In 2006, the Business Trust and the DPLG began the Nodal Economic Profiling Project, which was an initiative to develop economic profiles for the various rural and urban "poverty nodes" in South Africa. The project was part of the Community Investment Programme of the Business Trust.

A key output of this initiative was the Investment Atlas, which draws on the economic profiles of the various nodes to provide actionable solutions for stimulating growth.
