The spirit of working together
In 2008, the Business Trust Long Run ran from Qunu (near Mthatha) to Vilakazi Street in Soweto. The 1100km was run in celebration of Nelson Mandela''s 90th birthday, starting near his birthplace, and culminating outside his house on the famous Vilakazi Street in Soweto.
Mr Mandela embodies the idea that as a country we must work together to face the challenges and capture the opportunities our history presents us with. The Business Trust Long Run 2008 honours this spirit of working together, by bringing big business to small communities, and to demonstrate the power of partnership in celebration of a life of service to South Africa.
Shared Challenges for a Shared Future After completing their 10km stretch of the run, teams visited Business Trust supported projects, where they participated in the Business Trust Challenge: a series of activities that encourage them to work together, whilst giving them perspective on the challenges faced by local communities. There they competed against each other to complete tasks such as clearing road edges alongside Expanded Public Works contractors.
Each evening, teams attended celebratory dinners where they received their hard-won trophies and certificates.
